At Baitursynuly University, the AI-mektep platform was developed as part of the national program AI-Sana, and it was first tested by students from Budennovskaya School in the Mendykarinsky District.
AI-mektep is an innovative system that combines a digital learning environment with artificial intelligence tools.
The platform is designed to increase access to quality education and introduce modern technologies into the learning process.
The goal of the project is to help school students prepare for the UNT at their own pace, work with an AI mentor, and receive personalized academic support.
The Head of the KRU Center for Digital Technologies and AI, Kalybek Maulenov, revealed an important detail: standard neural networks can “hallucinate” (generate incorrect information). To ensure students receive only accurate answers, the developers implemented a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) model.
Notably, the test questions were developed with the involvement of local tutors specializing in UNT preparation.
In simple terms, the AI does not search the entire internet for answers—it operates strictly within a closed database of verified textbooks and materials, which KRU specialists compiled over six months.
Initially, the university considered purchasing a ready-made platform from the United States. However, the developers declined, stating that such a system was not for sale.
So KRU specialists built their own platform from scratch—and it is in no way inferior to international counterparts.
“Currently, the platform includes the ‘core five’ subjects: reading literacy, History of Kazakhstan, mathematical literacy, mathematics, and physics.
We plan to add biology, chemistry, and eventually all subjects to fully meet applicants’ needs,” said Kalybek Maulenov.
At present, the platform is operating in test mode for students of Budennovskaya School. However, other schools can also access the system by submitting a cooperation request to KRU.

If you are still unsure whether to pursue a technical or humanities track, try the “AI Career Guidance” Telegram bot.
It is completely free, available to everyone, and helps identify the professions that best match your interests and abilities.
While students were exploring the AI tutor, Rimma Bekturganova, Advisor to the Rector of KRU, conducted a master class for school teachers.
She explained how to write scientific articles that can reach a global audience—so everyone leveled up their skills.
“Seize every opportunity!” Kalybek Maulenov encouraged the students.
“Our generation didn’t have such tools—but you have an AI mentor in your pocket. KRU has created this digital key so you can easily open any door to your future. Go for it!”
