The Result of Years of Research

At the Pedagogical Institute of Baitursynuly University, a presentation was held for the scientific monograph by Professor Yuri Perezhogin, from the Department of Natural Sciences.

The monograph is titled “Vascular Plants of Kostanay Region” and is the result of extensive research by the Candidate of Biological Sciences and his co-authors.

This work was conducted as part of the state program IRN BR18574125: “Study of the Current State of Species Diversity of Vascular Plants in Kazakhstan Using Modern Methods of Botany, Molecular Genetics, and Bioinformatics”, in collaboration with LLP “National Biotechnology Center”.

The monograph summarizes two years of research under a grant project, and also incorporates results from over 30 years of botanical expeditions across all districts of the Kostanay region. The research included 25,000 herbarium specimens, as well as materials from the Institute of Botany and Phytointroduction (Almaty), Moscow State University, and the Institute of Botany of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg), among others.

The presentation was attended by Professor Perezhogin’s colleagues, project stakeholders, biology teachers from schools in Kostanay region, and university students and master’s students.

Speakers highly appreciated the monograph as a long-awaited and essential source of scientific information on the flora of vascular plants in Kostanay region.

Currently, the region is home to 1,145 plant species from 452 genera and 101 families.

Phytocenotic analysis revealed that the catastrophic decline of arid species is primarily due to widespread land cultivation, making the steppe areas the most vulnerable.

Rare and endangered plant species, listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan, are represented in the Kostanay region by 18 taxa (species and subspecies).

This is the first comprehensive publication of the vascular plant flora of Kostanay region.
