Champion Genes

The fourth winning project of the Young Scientists competition is “Genetic diversity, the impact of MSTN genetic polymorphisms and SINE insertions on the athletic performance of Kostanay breed horses.”

Author: Baimenov Bakhyt, Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Research at the Institute of Biological Sciences, Master of Veterinary Sciences.

What is the project about?

It explores how genetic characteristics affect the athletic performance of the renowned Kostanay breed horses.

What will the researcher do?

He will conduct a comprehensive study on the genetic diversity of the Kostanay breed by analyzing microsatellite markers and polymorphisms in the gene responsible for myostatin synthesis. These polymorphisms play a key role in determining the horses’ athletic traits. For the genetic analysis, no fewer than 100 biological samples will be collected.

Why is this important?

The research results will help identify additional avenues for improving the Kostanay breed, significantly expanding the possibilities for specialists in managing the selection process in the country’s competitive field of horse breeding.
