Why do modern media use hate rhetoric? What typical mistakes do the editors make in advertisement and journalistic texts? These questions were analyzed by the faculty, students, and graduate students of Baitursynuly University's Department of Journalism and Communication Management.
“Media Language and Style” educational seminar held within the Social and Humanities Faculty Innovation Month served as a platform for discussing these language issues. The seminar was organized by senior lecturer Aisulu Mukhanbetzhanova.
The topics addressed not only bridged theory and practice but also became the subject of research by bachelor students, master’s students, and professional journalists.
Participants reinforced complex linguistic themes with practical studies. Second-year student Aruzhan Anisova analyzed Kazakh-language advertisements in Kostanay, identified common mistakes, proposing several ways to fix them. Third-year student Raushan Aitbaeva conducted research on “Hate Language in Kazakhstani Media,” analyzing the role of mass media in shaping public sentiment. Second-year students Alexey Endres and Zlata Ivanova discussed the following language techniques used in journalistic writing: rhetorical questions, clichés, and engaging headlines. First-year master's students Adilia Aubakirova and Yana Garikusha offered valuable pieces of advice for those starting their professional careers.
Enduring issues of grammar and style were also addressed, as well as calquing, highlighted in Diana Iskakova's presentation.
The audience actively engaged in the discussion, asking questions and sharing insights. At the end of the seminar, the head of the department, Balazhan Mustafina, presented certificates to all the participants and thanked the organizers for an engaging and informative session.
Participants noted that such seminars provide both new knowledge and critical thinking enhancement, which are essential in today's media environment.
