Those Who Shape the University’s Spirit

Today, Baitursynuly University hosted what was arguably the most emotional seminar within the framework of the Winter School project.

The seminar focused on “The Role of the Academic Advisor in the University’s Educational System.”

The speaker of the event, Diana Rakpanova, Head of the Youth Policy Department, shared both practical experience and valuable personal insights.

Academic advisors from all educational programs of KRU attended the meeting — those who work with students on a daily basis and have firsthand knowledge of the challenges they face.

The seminar went far beyond theory. The discussion centered on real student situations and how an academic advisor can provide timely support, guidance, and help students find solutions, even during difficult life circumstances.

Participants were presented with real-life cases, including first-year student adaptation, conflicts in dormitories, and challenges in relationships between roommates.

Faculty members actively engaged in discussions, worked in teams, shared their experiences, and jointly searched for solutions that could truly be effective.

Diana Rakpanova analyzed each case in detail, emphasizing the importance of moving beyond a purely formal approach and acting with empathy and genuine attention to students’ needs.

“An academic advisor is a vital element of the university system,” Diana Bolatovna noted. “The primary task is to help students develop harmoniously, grow professionally, and feel like part of a united and cohesive academic community. When an advisor is truly committed to their role, it is reflected in everything — the atmosphere within the group, the trust between students and faculty, and the academic and personal achievements of the students.”
