“What Is LAW?”

A professor from Dokuz Eylul University (Türkiye) is currently working at the Faculty of Economics and Law of A. Baitursynuly Kostanay Regional University (KRU) under the academic mobility program.

The purpose of the visit by PhD, Professor Refik Korkusuz is to deliver professional development courses for KRU faculty members on “Research Specifics in Jurisprudence,” as well as lectures and academic consultations for Master’s and PhD students.

The international scholar opened his lecture with a thought-provoking question: “What is law?”

He explained:

– For me, law is your personal opportunity and the protection of your interests. Your phone, photos, personal belongings — all of these are your property and represent your tangible or moral interests.

Law is also about authority: the state grants you the power to act, use, and own. Without such powers, the concept of law would not exist.

Human rights are individual guarantees — the right to live, to study, and to access the internet.

In summary: law is a broad concept, human rights are specific individual entitlements, and justice (legal proceedings) is the mechanism for protecting them.

The lecture was held in a brainstorming format, encouraging active student engagement. Participants reflected, asked questions, and shared their own insights and conclusions.
