Attention, Faculty: Cyberattacks

According to the Center for Forecasting Criminal Threats and Public Safety Risks under the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Records of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan, there have been reported cases of cyberattacks targeting university faculty members.

During monitoring of the international information space, specialists from the Center identified activity by the cybergroup “Storm-2657”, which conducts attacks on faculty accounts.

According to foreign sources, several incidents have already been reported in the United States, where attackers sent fake emails disguised as official notifications from HR departments, messages about students, or other internal documents.

These emails contained phishing links that, when clicked, allowed hackers to gain access to faculty members’ accounts and modify payroll details.

Preliminary data indicate that approximately 25 educational institutions in the U.S. were affected, and more than 6,000 faculty members fell victim to these cyberattacks.

Dear faculty members of Baitursynuly University, please exercise caution and vigilance when using email:

Protect your personal data and avoid becoming a victim of cybercrime!
