Archaeological Laboratory

The Institute of Scientific and Technical Research, as part of the celebration of the Day of the Scientist, talks about the activities of the research laboratories of the Kostanay Regional University named after A. Baitursynov.

The archaeological laboratory, created in 1980 and headed by Andrey Logvin, is one of them.

The main areas of its activities are:

Over the years of Kazakhstan's independence, the laboratory staff found more than 500 archaeological monuments in the Kostanay region (these are Stone Age sites, settlements and burial grounds of the Bronze Age, burial mounds of the Early Iron Age and the Middle Ages). Stationary archaeological research was carried out at more than 20 sites. Among them, the most famous are: the Bestamak burial ground (studied with the support of the republican program "Cultural Heritage", initiated by the First President), the Halvay 3 and Karatomar burial mounds.

Currently, the laboratory staff is conducting research under a grant from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the topic: "New research on the Neolithic of Turgai: monuments and artifacts, chronology and transcultural relations, environment and paleoeconomics", received in 2021. The study of the archaeological heritage of Turgay is carried out in close cooperation with scientists from different countries. In addition, since 2015, the laboratory has been a member of a large international team for the study of ancient DNA (Center for GeoGenetics, University of Copenhagen), the results of these studies are the publication of scientific articles in co-authorship with more than 90 scientists in high-ranking journals of the Scopus database: Nature, Cell, Environmental Archaeology, Quaternary International, Stratum, Journal of Archaeological Science, etc.

In addition, since 2005, the archaeological monuments of Turgay have been studied by the laboratory staff under the state social order initiated by the akimat of the Kostanay region, as well as under the programs "Rukhani Zhangyru" and "Sacred Geography".

Archaeological research at the university is always carried out in close interaction with the educational process. Laboratory staff actively work with young people interested in the ancient history of the region. Specialists of the archaeological laboratory teach the discipline "Archaeology", conduct archaeological practice, during which students participate in excavations, take part in the office processing of materials received during the field season.

The university has an archaeological museum at the laboratory. All exhibits in the museum were found on the territory of the Kostanay region.
