From maps to ecological pathways

The Professor Tatiana Bragina from Baitursynuly University participated in an international seminar discussing the interim results of a project led by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP-WCMC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, and the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK). The project, titled "Supporting Kazakhstan in Achieving National Biodiversity Goals through the Creation of Institutional and Legal Frameworks for Expanding the Protected Areas Network (SPACES)”.

 The project SPACES aims to enhance Kazakhstan’s system of specially protected natural areas by expanding them and implementing other effective conservation measures (OECMs), such as the establishment of hunting reserves, ecological corridors, and more.

The Doctor of Biological Sciences and Professor at A. Baitursynuly Kostanay Regional University, Tatiana Bragina, participated in the event as the national and regional coordinator of the Ecological Networks (ECONET) project, which has formed the basis of conservation legislation for Central Asian countries in the development of protected areas.

The seminar approved common approaches and proposals for the spatial planning of protected areas and other forms of nature conservation, as well as the adaptation of Kazakhstan’s environmental legislation until 2035.

During the working meetings, the participants discussed public involvement in studying and protecting nature, including student engagement. Professor Tatiana Bragina also reached an agreement with specialists to hold a seminar on modern bird census techniques for the University’s Birdwatching Club at the Department of Natural Sciences, with financial support from ACBK.
