Relevance of the project: In Kazakhstan, in recent years, with the growth of the economic level, household consumption and, accordingly, the volume of solid household waste has increased significantly. Now the amount of waste per capita in the country is approaching the level of the EU. Kazakhstan's progress in the economic sphere (101st place in the environmental efficiency index) is constrained by the lag in the field of waste management (53.35 points of environmental viability). The main method of waste disposal is their placement in landfills and landfills. In this regard, there is a need to create a new approach to waste disposal. There are systemic problems in creating a waste management infrastructure, including the lack of qualified specialists who are able to cope with the growing amount of waste using a systematic approach.

Wider aim of the project is to influence current situation by measn of

  • development of engineering oriented educational programmes in the field of waste management at Master's level and
  • increasing awareness about circulatory economy by means of development of new educational programmes in HEIs.

Main target group includes students, teaching staff. Indirect beneficiaries of the project are industry partners, non-profit organizations and politicians.

Specific project objectives:

  • Development of a joint interdisciplinary Master's program in waste management at partner universities by September 2022;
  • 7-10 students from each partner university will enter the master's program in September 2022;
  • Compliance with the academic content of the Master's program in waste management
  • EU standards and the Bologna Process;
  • ransfer of knowledge to the teaching staff; provision of cross-country experience-exchange of experience between the teaching staff, students and business people will be provided through training sessions conducted by EU universities and during internships in the EU;
  • Effective use of the experience of relevant cluster waste management projects, current or completed (national, Erasmus plus, etc.).);
  • Raising public and policy-makers ' awareness of the issues to be addressed through round tables, consultations and a project platform and related social networks

Expected results:

  • The master's educational program "Waste Management" was developed, the recruitment of undergraduates for the educational program "Waste Management" in 2022 was completed;
  • Training and exchange of experience of 5-6 teachers and undergraduates at partner universities;
  • Training 1 enterprises in the field of waste management on an internship;
  • Purchase of equipment and computer programs for the Master's program;
  • Dissemination of information about the project, waste management and management, closed-loop economy, green economy through social networks and through direct contacts with the project target groups;
